Metrolink expansion delays ongoing

Expansion plans for Manchester’s Metrolink seem shrouded in continual controversy or bureaucracy, from spending cuts and revisions, environmental concerns and claims that not enough is being done to ensure that the local workforce is employed in expanding the tram system. It seems that just as the benefits to be reaped from the tram line expansion are significant, so too are the problems associated with seeing it through.

It was way back in the 1980s that Manchester news media first reported that local government were considering expanding the tram system, but it wasn’t until 2001 that concrete action was taken in the form of half a billion pounds being set aside by the national government to expand the tram lines from Manchester’s city centre out into the Greater Manchester region. Greater Manchester was created in 1974 from the parts of Lancashire and Cheshire closest to the city of Manchester. Apart from Manchester the area covers the old Lancashire towns of Oldham, Bury and Bolton, Wigan, Rochdale, the city of Salford and the former Cheshire towns of Stockport and Altrincham. Greater Manchester covers about 500 square miles and has a population of over 2.5 million. In common with it's traditions the area is highly industrialised.
