Sunderland holds Man City, Leeds United takes point at Anfield

LONDON, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Arsenal will take a four-point cushion into the weekend at the top of the Premier League after second-placed Manchester City was held to a 0-0 draw away to Sunderland on Thursday night.

Pep Guardiola's side increased its pressure on the Sunderland goal as the game progressed, but was unable to find a way past the home side's organized defending and the excellent Robin Roefs in goal.

Josko Gvardiol went closest for Manchester City, but his acrobatic flick came back off the wrong side of the Sunderland post.

Leeds United held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield for the second time in a month.

Liverpool created the better chances, with Hugo Ekitike missing an open goal with a first-half header when it looked easier to score.

Leeds had the ball in the net late on, but former Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin was ruled just offside, although the visitors extended their unbeaten run to six games.

Elsewhere, Thomas Frank's return to Brentford as Tottenham coach ended in a 0-0 draw, with the home side enjoying the better chances. Crystal Palace and Fulham drew 1-1.
